Topic: Sustainable Design
The role of the designer has changed through history from being an essential tool for survival, to being part of the cause of global warming by creating new products, not because we need them, but because business and the economy need us to buy them.
This creates one of the biggest opportunities for designers. Can we rise to this challenge?

Topic: Yacht Security in the 21st century : Reflections on Seamaster's Amazon expedition
Cruising yachts are increasingly seeking out remote locations for their voyages. Often these locations are in developing nations or in areas where security is an important issue. The voyage of the Blakexpeditions yacht Seamaster to the Amazon and Rio Negro rivers ended in tragedy when armed men boarded the vessel on the night of 6 December 2005. Skipper Sir Peter Blake was shot and killed and a number of crew members were injured. A security plan was in place onboard Seamaster and yet this did not avert the invasion of the yacht and the subsequent loss of life. Important lessons can be learned from this event and applied to design and planning for vessels intending to visit locations where security risks exist.
In this presentation Mark Orams will provide some personal reflections on the Seamaster incident. While not present during the invasion, Mark was onboard for a number of weeks during the Amazon/Rio Nego expedition prior. He will share his views on the security planning and measures in place on Seamaster and provide some recommendations for yachts considering voyages to remote and security risk areas in the future.

Topic: Crew Recruitment
Our changing political environment has brought forward new concerns regarding on-board security and staffing issues. We look at the constant challenge of security and international crew employment and screening.
Dieter, managing director of Viking Recruitment is the contracted supplier to supply crew to Lurssens and also the Holland America Cruise line. It is a changing and challenging area for the marine industry both recreational/ leisure and commercial and he has a good overview of the industry.

Topic: Superyacht Industry Economic Outlook - A Blueprint for the Future
It is always difficult to forecast accurately what is on the horizon in any industry, this business paper will attempt to highlight and focus on the current state of the Superyacht Business, delivering an intelligent analysis of where the market has come from, where it’s currently heading and perhaps more importantly, where it should be heading. While it is clear to everyone the market is currently enjoying much success, how do you define success, is it in sheer volume of orders, gross tonnage, deliveries per annum or more importantly, profitability of specific sectors. By using real facts and figures, the true position and state of the industry will be presented, coupled with a detailed projection of where the market needs to focus it’s energies and efforts in order to sustain the current growth, but perhaps with an emphasis on the bottom line rather than complex contracts that may or may not make money. The change needed within the market in order to move into next level of industry growth is just over the horizon, the paper will highlight personal observations of who, when and where in business terms, is truly ready for the next generation. The summary will deliver a “Blueprint for the Future”.
Michael Peters
Michael Peters Yacht DesignTopic: Where does 'Green' fit into the world of Superyachts?
• Perception to public: social acceptance of yachts / owners
• Perception to owner: social responsibility as seen by owner
• Ecological impact: sea bottom shoreline erosion, pollution, discharges
• Carbon footprint: emissions
• Consumption of natural resources: fuel, forestry, exotic materials
Discussion would include new technology solutions as applied to traditional yachts, not "science projects". Examples:
• Hybrid power
• Low impact propulsars
• Station Keeping
• Low wake hull forms
• Vessel as research platform
