Dr. Mark Orams to speak at Yacht Vision '08
Yacht security in the 21st century: Reflections on Seamaster's Amazon expedition - By Dr. Mark Orams
Cruising yachts are increasingly seeking out remote locations for their voyages. Often these locations are in developing nations or in areas where security is an important issue. The voyage of the Blakexpeditions yacht Seamaster to the Amazon and Rio Negro rivers ended in tragedy when armed men boarded the vessel on the night of 6 December 2005. Skipper Sir Peter Blake was shot and killed and a number of crew members were injured. A security plan was in place onboard Seamaster and yet this did not avert the invasion of the yacht and the subsequent loss of life.
Important lessons can be learned from this event and applied to design and planning for vessels intending to visit locations where security risks exist.
In this presentation Mark will provide some personal reflections on the Seamaster incident. While not present during the invasion, he was onboard for a number of weeks during the Amazon/Rio Negro expedition prior. He will share his views on the security planning and measures in place on Seamaster and provide some recommendations for yachts considering voyages to remote and security risk areas in the future.
Dr. Mark Orams is a successful yachtsman, scientist, environmentalist and adventurer. He was part of Sir Peter Blake’s crew aboard Steinlager 2 which won the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race and was a member of Team New Zealand’s two America’s Cup defences in Auckland. Dr. Mark Orams holds a bachelor's degree in environmental sciences, a master of science and a PhD and has authored numerous books and papers on the management of human impacts on marine resources. He founded the Coastal – Marine Research Group at Massey University’s Albany campus in New Zealand and was the founding Executive Director of the Sir Peter Blake Trust.

David Trubridge to speak at Yacht Vision '08
If you haven’t heard of David Trubridge, you will soon become a fan, of him and his design work, once you have met and heard him at Yacht Vision ’08.
David Trubridge graduated as a Naval Architect from Newcastle University Britain, but since then he has worked as a furniture designer/maker and architect. He settled in New Zealand after a long yacht voyage with his family. His design process combines innate craft knowledge, sculptural abstraction and computer design technology, as it draws on his life's rich experiences.
In the last few years he has exhibited at 100% Design in London, five times at the Salone del Mobile in Milan, and twice at ICFF in New York. His ‘Body Raft’ design is currently being manufactured by Cappellini, and was voted ‘Iconic’ by Urbis readers.
David’s presentation will introduce his work, showing his development through some of the key designs. He will talk about how the travel (sailing through the Pacific Islands – Antarctica) and different working environments have had their effect. He will also talk about how the role of the designer has changed through history from being an essential tool for survival, to being part of the cause of global warming, by creating new products. Not because we need them, but because business and the economy need us to buy them . . . and how this creates one of the biggest opportunities for designers. Can we rise to this challenge?

Michael Peters – Fuel-Guzzling Powerboat Designer Talks 'Green'
Since 1981, Michael Peters has completed over 350 designs, leading to the construction of over 25,000 fuel-guzzling powerboats. His work has ranged from small production boats to custom motor yachts over 150’ in length. Balancing aesthetic design and solid but creative engineering, the Michael Peters office is known for diversity and has been recognized for technical merit and innovation as well as artistic design. Awards from Showboats Magazine and the Superyacht Society sit on the shelf alongside the Kiekhaefer Memorial Award for Innovation in Offshore Racing.
Best known for his success in offshore racing, Michael confesses that in winning 12 UIM World Championships, his raceboats alone have consumed over 2 million gallons of fuel. Now, with the possibly more mature and almost sailor-like attitude that squeezing an extra 5 or 10% out of a 15-knot boat can be just as exciting as winning a race at 200+ mph, he should have an interesting perspective on the concept of the ‘green’ yacht.
