New Zealand Millennium Cup Pacific Series event review
New Zealand Millennium Cup Pacific Series a great success!
"The Millennium Cup superyacht regatta once again highlights how well suited New Zealand is as a destination and playground for large yachts," says Mark Wightman, chairman of NZ Marine which developed and organises the Millennium Cup.
"Our companies are recognised internationally for their expertise in boatbuilding, spar making, refits, marine hardware and accessories, making New Zealand increasingly attractive as a yachting destination. Auckland provides an excellent sailing venue and cruising ground right on the doorstep of our largest city and the Millennium Cup regatta makes the most of all those connections."
Monday 16/01/09 - Integrated Marine Group golf challenge results
The challenging 6,400 metre, par 72 golf course meanders through native grasses and vegetation with spectacular finishing holes, ocean views and rolling terrain, and is located on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, just north of Auckland.
Millennium Cup organisers invited sponsors and the many sailing and motor yachts visiting Auckland for the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series regatta to put forward their golfing teams and organising committee chairman Mark Wightman was delighted with the turn-out.
"With my Integrated Marine Group hat on, it was simply fantastic to see everyone enjoy a round of golf on this great course which overlooks the Hauraki Gulf where the superyachts were racing," says Mark. "We thank everyone for their enthusiasm and participation, particularly Oceanbridge Shipping who helped host the event and we extend our hearty congratulations to the winning golfers."

A big thankyou to all those involved in making this event a great success; the organising committee, RNZYS, sponsors and everybody else behind the scenes.
Silvertip wins the 2009 Millennium Cup Pacific Series
A small, but spirited fleet sailed four races in three days on three very different courses in Auckland Harbour. Using an IRC handicap system, Silvertip started near or at the rear of the fleet with the smaller yachts starting nearly half an hour in front of her in all four races.
The final two races were sailed around a 12-nautical mile triangular course off Auckland's East Coast Bays. In Fitzroy Yachts race three, Silvertip, an Ed Dubois-designed 33.8 metre sloop, proved well suited to the light conditions - 7-8 knots - to easily pass SY Janice of Wyoming, then SY Thalia and SY Naos on a shortened course to be saluted by the committee boat's gun on the finish line.
The sole division two entry SY Ragtime was again the quickest craft to complete the short course.
Built in New Zealand in 1964, the 19.8 metre Ragtime (formerly Infidel) has shown her considerable pace in a range of conditions throughout the regatta.
The afternoon's Southern Spars race four required two circuits of the triangular course and in 14-15 knots of breeze, the smallest yacht in the fleet, the 32-metre cutter rigged SY Naos started first and finished first much to the delight of all onboard. Janice of Wyoming crossed the line in second place to consolidate second place overall in the regatta while Silvertip finished third with Thalia fourth and Ragtime fifth.
Millennium Cup organising committee member Owen Rutter has been part of the crew onboard Silvertip for all four races. "The lighter conditions really favoured Silvertip in the morning race, but as the breeze picked up Janice of Wyoming had the advantage over us. Our racing was very close; at times just metres apart," says Rutter.
"All the competitors have thoroughly enjoyed the racing and, as we've seen with the IRC handicap system ably managed for us by Hal Wagstaff of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, different conditions suit different boats
and therefore it's great to see Naos and Janice of Wyoming sail so well in this final race of the regatta." Points were awarded on a reverse basis, with one point for a win, two points for second and so on. Silvertip finished on six points, Janice of Wyoming on eight, Naos on 12 and Thalia on 14, making Silvertip the Millennium Cup winner for 2009.
Mark Wightman, chairman of NZ Marine which developed and organises the Millennium Cup superyacht regatta, sums up the event as "...fantastic! We've had excellent, competitive sailing, a very spirited golf game at Gulf Harbour and some fantastic functions each evening.
"This encompasses everything a Millennium Cup regatta should be - an extremely enjoyable way to celebrate the New Zealand marine industry and our involvement in the international yachting fraternity. We thank all our competitors, all our guests to celebrated the regatta with us at our events and all our sponsors for helping us make the 2009 Millennium Cup Pacific Series a truly great regatta," says Wightman.
The 2009 Millennium Cup Pacific Series has been made possible with the support of Boat International Media, Alloy Yachts, Integrated Marine Group, Southern Spars, Fitzroy Yachts, Robinson Marine Interiors, Events Clothing, Viking Crew Management, Hall Spars, Electronic Navigation, Oceanbridge Shipping, Harken NZ, North Sails, IC Frith & Associates, Maxwell Marine, Mulcahy Engineering, Yachting Developments, 26000 Vodka, Lufthansa Private Jet, Lexus, Antipodes Water, Arano Juice and Domo Collections.
Tuesday 10/02/09 - Race Day 2
Fitzroy Yachts Race 3 and Southern Spars Race 4 - Captains' Briefing
Hal Wagstaff, RNZYS race officer for the NZ Millennium Cup Pacific Series, has advised that the competitors will sail the triangular course off Takapuna Beach on Wednesday 11 February.
The first race - Fitzroy Yachts race three - will start at 11:30am and the course is expected to be sailed in an anticlockwise direction, heading towards Rakino Island first, north-west towards Whangaparaoa and back to Takapuna. The course will be sailed twice-round, and will take approximately 100 minutes.
As soon as the last boat has completed the first race, the second race - Southern Spars race four - will start five (5) minutes later.
At the conclusion of these two races, the Millennium Cup Pacific Series regatta will be complete and the winner known. An official prizegiving takes place at 6pm on Wednesday evening.
Silvertip leading race for 2009 NZ Millennium Cup after day two
The superyachts contesting the New Zealand Millennium Cup Pacific Series in Auckland this week raced around an inner harbour course for their second of four races during the superyacht regatta.
Winner of race one, 33.8 metre Sailing Yacht (SY) Silvertip made it two wins from two when she crossed the line first in Robinson Marine Interiors race two.
Following the previous evening's captains' briefing, race officials and yacht captains also met again at 9:00am to review weather conditions and the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series race schedule to ensure that conditions were suitable for the superyachts - all 33 metres or more in length - to sail in the confined harbour situation.
The original 11:30am start time was delayed 90 minutes to accommodate the arrival of three large commercial ships at the Ports of Auckland.
Race officer Hal Wagstaff, of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, also amended the handicap system applied to the superyachts for their allocated starting time and order. Race one's start order was SY Naos, SY Thalia, Silvertip and SY Janice of Wyoming, with the division two entry of SY Ragtime five minutes after Janice of Wyoming. This order was revised to see Naos followed by Thalia, SY Zenji which raced for the first time today, Janice of Wyoming and Silvertip, then Ragtime.
Millennium Cup organising committee member Owen Rutter is part of the crew onboard Silvertip. From his on-the-water perspective, Rutter comments that the revised start order and light winds meant it took some time for the faster yachts to catch the slower ones.
"And that's as it's meant to be in these IRC handicap races - the aim is to have the yachts finish the course as close to each other as possible. Today, Silvertip won by just 15 seconds from Janice of Wyoming and when you're talking a 39.6 metre yacht and a 33 metre yacht, that's pretty close racing.
"In the light winds with rain throughout most of the race, slowly but surely Janice of Wyoming and Silvertip caught the others," says Rutter. "Behind us, the 19.8 metre Ragtime - another yacht built in New Zealand with some fantastic race heritage - proved to be the fastest boat around the course today. Having started five minutes behind Silvertip, Ragtime came through the fleet to finish third overall just three-and-a-half minutes behind us. That was great sailing from Chris Welsh and his crew on Ragtime. Naos and Thalia finished very close together and Zenji - the largest in the fleet - crossed the line last."
The Millennium Cup also hosted a golf day for sponsors and non-sailing superyacht crews today. Six teams of four teed off at the scenic Gulf Harbour Country Club for the Integrated Marine Group golf challenge.
Mark Wightman, chairman of NZ Marine which developed and organises the Millennium Cup superyacht regatta, was at the golf day and said a fantastic game was enjoyed by all. Wightman also flew out to Rakino Island to meet up with Millennium Cup guests who travelled to the island on MY Acheron. Also hosted by Millennium Cup sponsor Integrated Marine Group, media and guests enjoyed lunch at Hurakia Lodge, an exclusive luxury retreat recently completed on the Hauraki Gulf island.
Points are awarded on a reverse basis, so Silvertip has now has two points, Janice of Wyoming four points, Thalia six and Naos eight. The yacht with the least number of points after the event's four races will win the New Zealand Millennium Cup for 2009.
The final two races will be sailed on Wednesday 11 February and will comprise two circuits of a triangular course off Takapuna Beach. Officials will confirm the scheduled start time of 11:30am at this evening's captains' briefing.
Race 2 update:
Monday 9/02/09 - Race Day 1
Silvertip takes first NZ Millennium Cup race
The first race of the New Zealand Millennium Cup Pacific Series superyacht sailing regatta - sponsored by Alloy Yachts - was won by the 33.8 metre Sailing Yacht (SY) Silvertip.
With the five Millennium Cup entrants racing around a Gulf Island course, each superyacht was started at a specific time according to their IRC rating off Takapuna beach to sail a pursuit race that saw the yachts sail around Tiri Tiri Matangi Island and Rakino Island, then back to Takapuna.
Although the breeze was very light until just before the 11:30am start, it quickly built as soon as the first starter, SY Naos, crossed the line, says Millennium Cup organising committee member Owen Rutter who was part of the crew on SY Silvertip.
"The crew on Naos did a fantastic job to hold their lead over the faster boats until nearly the end of the reaching leg to Rakino," says Rutter. "They led for nearly half the race, but unfortunately blew their spinnaker just before rounding Rakino."
On Silvertip, Rutter says they passed second starter SY Thalia just going into the Tiri Passage at the end of the first leg.
"The yachts had to tack through the Tiri Passage which was quite tricky as yachts of 100ft (33m) in length don't tack too easily. Throughout the race we had around 15 to 16 knots of breeze with a maximum of 20 knots, which was fantastic.
"SY Janice of Wyoming made up a lot of time on Silvertip during the reach to Rakino and our division two entrant, SY Ragtime, also looked to be having a very competitive race a little behind the division one yachts.
"Several competitors commented to me that they really enjoyed today's race course as we sailed around islands, not just buoys, which added a unique Auckland Harbour dimension to the whole race."
Mark Wightman, chairman of NZ Marine which developed and organises the Millennium Cup superyacht regatta, was on the water on a spectator boat as the yachts crossed the finish line within approximately ten minutes of each other.
"It was a magnificent sight watching these luxury craft under full sail," said Wightman. "There were a number of spectators gathered to watch our race finish and every Millennium Cup competitor got a great welcome home."
Silvertip was followed home by Janice of Wyoming, Thalia, Naos and Ragtime. Points are awarded on a reverse basis, so Silvertip has one point, Janice of Wyoming two points, etc. The yacht with the least number of points after the event's four races will win the New Zealand Millennium Cup for 2009.

Millennium Cup entrants now include S.Y. Zenji
S.Y. Zenji is in Auckland with her high profile owner, says Mark Wightman, chairman of the Millennium Cup Pacific Series organising committee.
"We are absolutely delighted to have a superyacht of Zenji's calibre involved with the Millennium Cup - you can tell the passion for a great on-the-water duel during our three-day regatta will notch up another level with their involvement!"
Co-designed by Italy yacht builders Perini Navi and Ron Holland Design, the superyacht was also built by Perini Navi and launched in 2004 as Santa Maria, but then had her name changed to Zenji. Two other Millennium Cup entrants, S.Y. Thalia and S.Y. Naos are also Ron Holland Design superyachts.
Wightman says that excitement is building amongst the event's organising committee. "With just five days until we start sailing, we're down to the finer details of refining the race courses, coordinating guest tickets and the like.
"This is going to be a fiercely contested Millennium Cup and we welcome Zenji to the competition," concludes Wightman.

S.Y. Naos confirmed for Millennium Cup
The 105ft cutter rig S.Y. Naos has been confirmed as a Millennium Cup entrant, bringing the total number of confirmed entrants in the event's division one class for superyachts over 100ft to four. "We're delighted to announce that S.Y. Naos will join S.Y. Janice of Wyoming, S.Y. Thalia and S.Y. Silvertip to sail for the Millennium Cup on Auckland Harbour next week,' says Mark Wightman, chairman of the Millennium Cup Pacific Series organising committee. "And assuming that the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series lay day falls on a suitable day of the Millennium Cup, we'll also see S.Y. Zenji join the others for one of our races."
"Along with S.Y. Ragtime and the unofficial-but-nonetheless interesting entry of NZL41, one of New Zealand's America's Cup boats from 1995, we are surer than ever this is going to be a great sailing regatta."
"We're very close to confirming one, possibly two more sailing yachts," adds Wightman. "We won't say which ones just yet; let's get the entry details confirmed with the owners and crews first.
"While this Millennium Cup won't have the sheer numbers we saw at our last event in Palma de Mallorca, we're confident the sailing will be no less intense as these fantastic sailing yachts compete in a best of four races regatta for the cup."
Sail in the Millennium Cup with NZL41
We're delighted to announce that the former America's Cup boat NZL41 is invited to sail in the Millennium Cup Pacific Series (as a non-cup contender) allowing paying guests to enjoy competing alongside the superyachts. You may like to consider this as an option for VIP guests to get amongst the Millennium Cup action for a day. This offer is not available to the public (at this stage). Contact Jo at NZ Marine on 09 376 1300 or jo@nzmarine.com for more details.
Friday 30/01/09 - 10 Days to go!
Millennium Cup race courses revealed:
During the three day event, competitors in the sailing divisions will be sent to one of four courses depending on weather conditions and which course the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series teams are using that day, explains NZ Marine chairman Mark Wightman.
"As RNZYS is also managing the Louis Vuitton regatta, it makes for a smooth operation to have our complimentary regatta administered by the same highly-skilled organisation," says Mark.
"Just like the Louis Vuitton series, our skippers attend an early morning briefing where they are advised which race course they'll be sailing that day with an 11am start. We will then promptly advise media and post on our website, www.millenniumcup.co.nz, which sailing course is being used so that public can make the most of the opportunities to see these fantastic superyachts under full sail."
The longest of the Millennium Cup races will involve the Hauraki Gulf islands. Starting off Takapuna beach, the yachts head northeast through the deepwater passage between the end of Whangaparaoa peninsula and Tiritiri Matangi Island, then northwest to round Moturoa Island and back through the Tiri passage to Takapuna. There are three different options within this course with the longest being around 40 nautical miles and the others around 33 nautical miles. One of the shorter options includes rounding Rakino Island before returning to the finish.
The inner harbour race is sure to offer spectators fantastic photo opportunities, says Mark. "The superyachts cross the start off Princes Wharf, head towards Motuihe Island to round ‘Northern Leading' mark then sail back up the harbour to a mark near the harbour bridge and back to Princes Wharf. Seeing these magnificent yachts under full sail so close to both shores of Auckland Harbour is certainly going to be exciting to watch."
The inner harbour race can only take place on a day when the Louis Vuitton competitors are sailing either their blue or green courses (the more northern courses).
The third and final race course for Millennium Cup competitors involves two shorter races off Takapuna Beach. A triangular course will be marked with buoys, taking the yachts out towards Rakino Island, north towards Gulf Harbour and back to Takapuna. One of these short courses will be sailed in the morning and the other in the afternoon.
Ragtime on the Band Wagon!
The most recent entrant to the Millennium Cup 2009 is Ragtime (ex-Infidel). Ragtime has covered 150,000 miles of the earth's watery surface since she was launched in 1964, half of those on the race course.
Built in New Zealand by John Spencer for NZ industrialist Tom Clark, she was a break through design in terms of very lightweight construction, weighing 24,000 pounds in an era when most 65 footers weighed twice that. With a long, narrow planing hull and chines and Spencer's Art Deco stainless window frames, Infidel was also visually unusual. She has benefitted over the years from keel, rudder and mast updates, but the iconic hard chined hull and black, teak, and stainless look are unchanged.

Friday 23/01/09 - Antipodes Announced as Official supplier of Water to the 2009 Millennium Cup
Antipodes is a New Zealand company, producing New Zealand water, "pure and simple".
Antipodes sources one of the world's purest waters. When much of the bottled water in New Zealand was being shipped in from Europe - one of the most industrialised continents on Earth, Antipodes began sourcing from one of the least populated countries on Earth. In a place renowned for pure water, Antipodes is rated as the purest. Antipodes then also added a fine bead " to create the perfect sparkling water to compliment well crafted food and wine".
"Finally we wanted it to look good. It didn't have to stand out on a supermarket shelf, because it would never be on one. We didn't want it to stand out on a restaurant table either - even though it would most certainly be on one. We wanted it to compliment a table setting rather than dominate it. We believe the heroes of the table should be the wine and food, not the water bottle. So we kept the bottle short and fat and we kept it clean and simple. We wanted it to look as pure on the outside as it in fact was on the inside".
Antipodes has been consistently rated as one of the finest waters in the world and the purest in New Zealand, and the company is passionate about the environment. Antipodes water is from a huge naturally renewing equifer, and is bottled at source only in glass bottles which are produced locally from recycled glass which is, in turn, recyclable. Antipodes is the first premium water brand to be certified carbon neutral, and is carbon neutral to any table, hotel room or home anywhere in the world.
"Drink Chilled. Drink Often. Live Well".

Arano are keen to play their part in helping showcase the best of what New Zealand has to offer to a discerning local and international audience with their new range of 100% squeezed, pure New Zealand Valencia Orange juice.
Arano began in the mid 1960's with the planting of the valencia orange and tangelo trees in the fertile land and temperate climate of Gisborne, perfect citrus growing territory. Squeezing the delicious fruit and delivery to customers began in 1982. Ever since, Arano has had the reputation for producing the best tasting and most innovative chilled juice products on the market. All Arano products are only lightly pasteurized so as to keep as much of the natural colour and goodness and taste as possible.
The new Arano 100% Squeezed range of New Zealand juices are:
Seasonal - Using valencias (the best juicing orange) and tangelos only when they are in season, to get the best taste.
Local - Sourcing 95% of their squeezed fruit (excludes limes) from local New Zealand growers from places such as Kerr Rd orchard and Yarrow Brae orchards in Gisborne.
Regional - Using oranges from Keri Keri and Gisborne, grapefruit from the Bay of Plenty, carrots from South Canterbury, tomatoes from Gisborne and apples from the Hawkes Bay.
Sustainable - By using as much local fruit as possible, Arano support local growers and reducing their environmental impact. The company also works with growers to grow grade fruit that requires much less spray than market fruit and navels in particular, since for juice, how the fruit tastes is much more important than how it looks.
100% Juice - In the premium "white label" range 100% pure squeezed New Zealand orange juice is used, full of sun infused New Zealand goodness with no added preservatives.
